CKB, the Code Knowledge Backend, turns a codebase into a queryable knowledge base reachable three ways: as an MCP server for AI assistants such as Claude and Cursor, as a command-line tool, and as an HTTP API. It indexes code using SCIP, the language-agnostic code-intelligence format, and LSP integration, which gives it real symbol resolution rather than text matching. On that index it answers the questions that are expensive to answer by reading files: where a symbol is defined and every place it is referenced; impact analysis, meaning what else breaks if a given function or type changes; architecture mapping, showing how modules actually depend on one another as opposed to how the documentation says they do; ownership, identifying who has worked on a piece of code; and dead-code detection. For an agent the practical effect is the same as for a human reviewer — before editing a function, ask what calls it — which is precisely the check agents most often skip. It is written in Go, distributed on npm as @tastehub/ckb, with its own website and documentation and a companion Rust CLI called LIP. The audience is teams working in large codebases where the cost of a change is dominated by not knowing what depends on it.
