5ire is a sophisticated cross-platform desktop AI assistant and Model Context Protocol (MCP) client designed to enhance AI functionality by integrating with major AI service providers such as OpenAI, Azure, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, and others. It supports local knowledge bases and tools through MCP servers, enabling users to extend AI capabilities beyond simple conversations. The project leverages MCP, an open protocol that standardizes how applications provide context to large language models (LLMs), similar to how USB-C standardizes device connections. This allows 5ire to connect AI models to various data sources and tools, including file systems, system information, databases, and remote data access. Key features include support for tools via MCP servers, a local knowledge base powered by the bge-m3 multilingual embedding model, and the ability to parse and vectorize multiple document formats such as docx, xlsx, pptx, pdf, txt, and csv. This enables robust Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) capabilities locally. Additionally, 5ire offers usage analytics to monitor API usage and spending, a prompts library for creating and organizing versatile prompts with variable support, bookmarks to save conversations independently of original message deletion, and quick search functionality across all conversations. The project also promotes community engagement through an open marketplace for MCP servers, allowing users to discover and share MCP server creations easily. Installation requires Python, Node.js, and the uv Python package manager for the MCP server runtime environment, with detailed guides available for installation, development setup, and one-click server installation integration. Overall, 5ire provides a powerful, extensible AI assistant platform that leverages the Model Context Protocol to connect AI models with diverse tools and data sources, enhancing the AI experience for users and developers alike.
